42 portraits narrate the history of first-generation immigrants who came to Marseille from Northern Africa between 1940 and 1970.
Abed Abidat photographed Chibanis and Chibanias, low-profile people, in order to give a human face to a silent majority whose eyes, smiles and poses are very expressive.
Far from the stereotypes of immigrant workers, these portraits conjure the history of these "ordinary" people who have expended considerable energy to pass on the cultural codes of their original country and to bring up their children in France.
